Why Fire Strategies Are Going Digital
Fire safety is entering a new era.
For decades, fire strategies were static documents — technical reports that explained how buildings complied with regulation and protected people in the event of fire. But as our buildings become smarter, more connected, and more data-driven, the way we manage fire safety must evolve too.
Welcome to the age of the Digital Fire Strategy — where safety is no longer documented once, but managed continuously.
From Paper to Data
Traditionally, fire strategies were written reports supported by plans, diagrams, and calculations. They captured design intent at a single point in time — usually before the building was completed.
The limitation? Once construction started, those documents quickly fell out of date.
Changes made during design development or later refurbishments rarely made their way back into the fire strategy. Over time, the link between design, construction, and operation weakened — sometimes with tragic results. The Building Safety Act 2022 has changed that forever.
It requires a living, digital record of building safety information — the so-called Golden Thread — ensuring data remains accurate, traceable, and accessible for the entire life of a building. The fire strategy is now at the heart of that system.
What Is a Digital Fire Strategy?
A Digital Fire Strategy (DFS) is a structured, data-driven version of the traditional fire strategy — built within Building Information Modelling (BIM) environments and linked directly to every fire-critical component in the building.
Each fire door, wall, damper, and detector carries digital attributes describing its performance, certification, and maintenance schedule.
These are all stored in a Common Data Environment (CDE), forming a single source of truth that evolves as the building does.
When combined with systems like CFD smoke modelling, evacuation simulations, and CAFM maintenance records, the Digital Fire Strategy becomes a living, intelligent system — capable of continuous verification and real-time insight.
Why It Matters
Digital Fire Strategies offer benefits that go far beyond efficiency:
- Transparency: Everyone — from designers to regulators — can see how the building performs.
- Accountability: Every change is logged, versioned, and auditable.
- Accuracy: Live links between design models and maintenance systems prevent data drift.
- Predictive Safety: Integrated AI and sensor data can forecast risks before they occur.
- Regulatory Confidence: The Digital Fire Strategy provides evidence for compliance at every Gateway and throughout building operation.
In short, digitalisation doesn’t just improve how we design — it transforms how we assure safety, long after construction is complete.
The Role of the Fire Engineer
For fire engineers, this shift is both a challenge and an opportunity.
We must now combine traditional engineering judgement with digital competence — understanding how data is structured, validated, and secured.
Tomorrow’s fire engineer will be as comfortable managing information models as analysing fire dynamics.
It’s a step change in the profession’s identity — from document authorship to data stewardship.
A Connected Future
The Digital Fire Strategy is more than a technical upgrade. It represents a cultural evolution in how we think about safety — as a continuous, data-driven process that links design intent, operational reality, and long-term accountability.
In the years ahead, as AI, digital twins, and predictive analytics mature, fire strategies will evolve even further — providing live dashboards of building safety performance and adaptive systems capable of responding automatically to risk.
It’s an exciting time for the industry — one where fire engineering, information technology, and digital governance converge to deliver safer, smarter, and more resilient buildings.
Closing Thoughts
The Digital Fire Strategy isn’t just the future — it’s already here.
It embodies everything the modern built environment demands: integrity, intelligence, and lifelong accountability.
As I explore in my forthcoming book Digital Fire Strategies – Data, Design, and the Golden Thread, this shift redefines how we design, verify, and manage fire safety — ensuring that the knowledge we create today continues to protect people tomorrow.
